01 — The brief02

A technology founder
who now makes films

Both sites need to feel like they belong to the same person: a Marine officer, Palantir and Theorem operator, now building an independent studio in Texas and Los Angeles. Credible to investors and filmmakers alike, with a quiet American, conservative-leaning point of view.

  • Rough CutThe studio. Bold, cinematic, built to entertain first. Says what it believes without lecturing.
  • RyanThe person. Calmer and more personal: service, the work so far, and what he’s building now.
  • SharedThe Rough Cut mark, the Chisos Mountains of West Texas, and the same copy in every direction. Only the look changes.
02 — The spectrum03

From subtle to explicit

Each direction says more, more loudly, about where Ryan comes from. All of them are viable; the question is how much of it the sites should wear on their sleeve.

03 — Direction A04

A · Quietest · Built

Plainspoken

The site as a short, plain statement of fact. Almost no color, very little copy, no decoration: a founder who doesn’t need to sell.

Color

Type

Character first

Inter, in two sizes

Signature details

  • About a hundred words per page
  • Ryan’s career as a dated, CV-style list
  • Light and dark modes, following the device
  • No motion; links are just underlined

Watch for
Can feel underpowered for a studio whose business is images. Every word has to be exactly right.

04 — Direction B05

B · Subtle · Built and on staging

Cinematic Noir

Indie cinema with a defense-tech edge. Dark, mysterious and confident: the studio as a cutting room at night.

Color

Type

Character first

Inter Tight, IBM Plex Mono; Cormorant Garamond for Ryan’s name

Signature details

  • Timecode labels, viewfinder corners, film grain
  • The Rough Cut mark in 3D, folding open as you scroll
  • Ryan’s site is its navy, serif-led sibling

Watch for
Dark sites can feel closed-off; this one relies on the copy to carry the warmth.

05 — Direction C06

C · Aspirational · Built

Magic Hour

Full-color and blockbuster-confident, with an aerospace feel, graded for dust and grain rather than pastel. Named for the cinematographers’ golden hour: the best light for filmmaking.

Color

Type

Character first

Instrument Serif for headlines, Inter Tight for text

Signature details

  • A dusty sky that burns down to amber as you scroll, with film grain
  • Golden-hour photography of crews and aircraft
  • The mark’s six lines become vapor trails and searchlights
  • Ryan’s career told as one day: first light to magic hour

Watch for
The photography is licensed stock for now. Without a proper color shoot of sets and crews it can tip into airline-ad territory.

06 — Direction D07

D · Through imagery · Built

Bleach Bypass

Rough Cut told through photography, graded like the war films Ryan loves: crushed blacks, drained color, silvered highlights. About people, dust and landscape, never combat.

Color

Type

Character first

Big Shoulders Stencil for headlines, Courier Prime for captions, Barlow for text

Signature details

  • One grade on every photograph, with moving film grain
  • Principles as full-screen photographs, with hard cuts between them
  • Ryan’s career as four prints with typed captions

Watch for
Can read as a war-film studio before any titles are announced, and it depends entirely on photography. The mockup uses licensed stock; it needs Ryan’s service photos and a commissioned shoot.

07 — Direction E08

E · Explicit · Built

Mission Systems

Rough Cut presented the way a defense-tech company presents a platform. Bright, precise and data-forward: a studio with engineering discipline.

Color

Type

Character first

Archivo Expanded for headlines, IBM Plex Mono for data and labels

Signature details

  • A turning wireframe of the Chisos with live readouts
  • Capabilities as spec sheets; the slate as a Programs board
  • Ryan’s site as a service record, numbers counting up

Watch for
Can read as a contractor rather than a studio, and the flag colors make the point of view louder. Needs warm film stills to balance it.

What we need from Ryan

  1. Pick a direction

One of these, or a mix (for example Noir’s restraint with Magic Hour’s daylight). The chosen direction gets built out across both sites.

  2. How loud should the point of view be?

Where on the subtle-to-explicit line Ryan wants Rough Cut to sit, for filmmakers, talent and investors.

  3. Sign off the copy

The Rough Cut mission and principles, his bio introductions and the career descriptions are drafts.

  4. Photography and footage

Magic Hour needs a color shoot; Bleach Bypass needs Ryan’s service photos and a shoot in its grade; Mission Systems needs warm film stills. Any existing set, crew or aerial footage helps every direction.

  5. Projects

Real titles for In Development when they can be public, or confirmation to keep the teaser.

  6. Domains and logo

Access to the domain registrars to move both sites live, and the original vector logo file if one exists.
